On Thursday, July 14, Gordon Ryan took the mats with Pedro Marinho for the vacant Who’s Number One (WNO) title at the Who’s Next Finale.

In typical Gordon Ryan fashion, he gave the commentators a sealed envelope before the match with his prediction written inside. The envelope was not to be revealed until after the dust settled, and for the first time in his career, he couldn’t correctly predict his winning moment…. but who cares!

Ryan utilized his height advantage early in the match, using heavy collar ties and effective hand fighting to dominate the stand-up portion of the match. Then nearly seven minutes in, Ryan landed a takedown after taking Marinho’s back while standing.

From top position, Ryan put on a clinic with his trademark pressure passing. With over 20 minutes remaining in the fight, he moved to mount position. Ryan proceeded from mount to suffocate Marinho minute after minute, draining Marinho’s energy and seemingly looking to achieve a chest smother submission. Marinho, to the shock of many, defended by going bell-down and exposing his back. Nonetheless, Ryan continued to insist on forcing the mount position.

Ryan held his commanding mount position until five minutes were left on the clock when he transitioned to Marinho’s back. From there, Ryan isolated an arm and sunk in a clean rear-naked choke (RNC) with four minutes remaining which sealed the deal for the smothered Marinho.

After the match Ryan stated that he had predicted to finish Marinho with a smother…. Even though he missed his prediction, as mentioned above, he dominated every minute of the match and won spectacularly.

We’ll see Gordon Ryan compete next when he matches up against Felipe Pena for their trilogy bout.

Originally scheduled to be the final match of the evening, Ryan vs. Marinho actually took place before the no-time limit co-main event between Kyle Chambers and Izaak Michell, which to the amazement of many, reached a conclusion after nearly 100 minutes of grappling!! To put that in perspective, that would be the equivalent of rolling 20 strait 5 min rolls in your regular training routine to gain the W…. impressive!… that match was also momentarily paused and moved to another mat so Ryan and Marinho could grapple for the title.
