Iconic BJJ competitor Rodolfo Vieira is competing in his 10th professional MMA fight at UFC Vegas 57, taking on the streaking Chris Curtis. This Wednesday, Rodolfo spoke to the press regarding his bout against Curtis and how he ranks his advancement as an MMA fighter.

“Now I’m feeling a blue belt, with no stripe,” Vieira teased when asked if he is still a “white belt” in MMA. “Maybe after, if I beat Chris, one stripe. Yes, of course; as soon as I got into UFC, I had only five fights and maybe three years of training. My first sparring, I was 27 years when I did my first sparring. After that, only jiu-jitsu and wrestling… It’s hard to get experience being inside the UFC, it’s very hard inside the biggest event of the world, the biggest company, where the best fighters are, but it is what it is.”

Even with Vieira’s incredible accomplishments in the jiu-jitsu and grappling world, he is still fresh new to MMA. Much of Rodolfo’s development as a fighter has been under the bright lights of UFC, fighting world-class opponents. Currently, Vieira is 3-1 in the UFC and is coming off a July 2021 win over Dustin Stoltzfus. Prior, he suffered a shocking loss against Anthony Hernandez.

As much as Vieira is climbing up the ladder as an MMA fighter, he is still a jiu-jitsu player at heart. When he squares up against the striker Curtis at UFC Vegas 57, you can bet on what Vieira intends to do.

“He’s gonna try to keep the fight standing, and I’m gonna try to use my jiu-jitsu and my wrestling,” he said.

A veteran of 36 bouts, Curtis, 34 years old, is a dominant striker. Since signing with the UFC in 2021, Chris has reeled off two TKO wins over Phil Hawes and Brendan Allen, respectively. Curtis was a substantial underdog in both of those bouts.

Rodolfo is one of the most decorated jiu-jitsu players in the game that is currently competing in MMA. He took 1st at the IBJJF Worlds every year from 2011 to 2014, and in 2015, he returned home with the coveted ADCC gold. Pressure passing and top game are the name of the game for Vieira, and hasn’t competed in grappling for two years except for his submission loss to Kaynan Duarte at WNO.
