Renzo Gracie was recently spotted engaging in a fight in a New York Subway. It is reported that Renzo was conversing in Portuguese with one of his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belts and staff members from his very popular New York GYM. Then, the BJJ icon was confronted by an individual for speaking a foreign language (Portuguese), who yelled at Renzo to “speak English here in America.”

Renzo then responded, accusing the uncharacteristically aggressive man of racism – and a fight then ensued. As is more or less clearly seen by the Instagram video below, Renzo was caught off guard by the takedown from the assailant, but he quickly reversed the situation and started with a Body Lock passing his legs. A not so wise female bystander tried to pull Gracie away from the assailant but was stopped smartly by another bystander.

Reports have surfaced that Renzo quickly established an Arm Triangle hold a few moments into the fight and got a “verbal tap,”; with the perpetrator apologizing. Renzo released him soon after, with Renzo reportedly making him apologize for his previous remarks.

A Reddit user also uploaded an audio recording of Renzo’s explanation of the fight. The accounts are primarily in Portuguese, with a few English words sprinkled in. As mentioned above, Renzo claims that the man insulted him and his black belt staff members with taunts for speaking Portuguese in the U.S.

The Reddit user also states that Renzo knew he was on video and being recorded and wisely decided not to use striking.

The assailant seems to have had no idea who he was insulting… an ADCC Hall of Fame athlete, pioneering MMA fighter, and world champion. That said, Renzo is no stranger to street fighting in Brazil or here in the U.S.… having stopped two NYC muggers in 2012 and breaking a bouncer’s arm back in 2014.

Renzo Gracie is one of the most iconic and charismatic BJJ athletes and coaches worldwide. His love for Jiu-Jitsu is nearly unmatched, as he’s said in an interview for the Frota Academy:

“Jiu-Jitsu is… Everything I am. It’s like I’m Jiu-Jitsu, and Jiu-Jitsu is me. The reality is, if you take Jiu-Jitsu out of me, I don’t see. I apply Jiu-Jitsu not only on the mats, not only when I’m fighting… But I apply Jiu-Jitsu really in everything. Really in all situations.”

“Jiu-Jitsu is a foundation of a huge building. It’s a way of life.” He is clearly grateful for being a part of Jiu-Jitsu’s history and for the daily opportunity to transfer his vast knowledge:

“One thing that I see that has been of importance through my family is – keeping the knowledge alive. Strengthening the spine of this amazing sport. I feel very honored to be a link on this amazing chain of relatives and people, and those who will come after me to keep teaching Jiu-Jitsu, to keep passing the knowledge forward.”

We certainly think the assailant felt the knowledge in that subway and are thankful it was resolved without any freak accidents or escalation.

This story is still developing, and we will keep you posted as the news unfolds.

This is a wonderful lesson on how Jiu-Jitsu really does work for self-defense and to always be on your guard… even the best can be initially caught off guard. But with the proper knowledge and mat time, you can reverse any situation and de-escalate a bad situation before it gets too out of hand.
