Are you a novice in BJJ or an experienced grappler? If so, then it is likely that you want to improve your grip strength. Not only is grip strength one of the most important physical attributes for success in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and grappling, but we have all had those annoying training partners with iron grips!…. if you are looking to gain the upper hand during sparring sessions then it’s time to focus on increasing your gripping power. Whether you’re training with a gi or no-gi, having strong grips can give you an advantage on the mat. Of all the exercises to build grip strength, rope climbing stands out above them all! In this article, we’ll explore how utilizing this exercise will help your grappling performance and why it is worth including in your routine.

When it comes to building formidable grip strength, there are many options available – deadlifts, pull-ups, suitcase carries and more. Yet nothing can quite compare to the advantages of rope climbing. One main benefit is that it harnesses your weight and thus requires superior hand power. Additionally, unlike other exercises which often require additional equipment or a gym membership for optimal results, you don’t need anything special in order to do rope climbing! Moreover, the rope will become slippery with time, hence you must hold tight for your safety. Additionally, after reaching the summit of this exercise, descending efficiently is equally important to safeguarding yourself from severe injuries. Despite its difficulty level initially, soon enough you’ll realize that all these precautions are essential in experiencing the advantages it brings.

So, How Do You Climb a Rope?

There are two main techniques to ascend a rope: with your legs and without. While using the lower limbs can assist you, it won’t apply enough tension on your back or hands. This style is utilized in Crossfit as its aim is to reach multiple reps too quickly as possible. If however, you’re trying to increase grip strength with the activity then just use your arms for optimal results. To do a rope climb in the safest manner, sit on the ground and begin your ascent from there. Keep your movements small and avoid straining your arms as overextending them can lead to injuries. As you reach the summit of the rope, slowly descend! Don’t just let go of it or else risk hurting yourself when landing back down on solid ground. Once you have safely returned to where you started from, repeat this exercise as many times necessary until familiar with it enough that adding more weight is an achievable challenge for later on!
