Tim Spriggs surprised fans worldwide when he fought and took the heavyweight division at the Who’s Number One (WNO) championships last September. He, with speed, submitted Kaynan Duarte in the final to take home the inaugural WNO heavyweight title.

Spriggs has not defended his belt since winning it roughly ten months ago and instead chose to spend his time coaching Craig Jones on FloGrappling’s reality show, Who’s Next.

Jones actually competed against Marinho himself for the then-vacant WNO Light-Heavyweight title earlier this year but could not perform and ultimately lost by a unanimous decision. Following this, Pedro Marinho was then set to make his first title defense at the same event featuring the Who’s Next finale, facing off against Gordon Ryan in what will only be Ryan’s second professional grappling match of 2022 after submitting Jacob Couch previously at WNO.

Spriggs has been stripped of that title, quite suddenly, might we add, and the scheduled match between Gordon Ryan and Pedro Marinho is now elevated to the heavyweight championship match. The news was announced by FloGrappling’s Michael Sears a few days ago.

Earlier this year, Spriggs expressed that after winning the WNO heavyweight belt, he actively tried to create a match against Ryan, but it was brushed off. On the other hand, Ryan has vehemently maintained that Spriggs refused the match…. The jury is still out on what actually went down leading up to the Gordon Ryan vs. Pedro Marinho heavyweight match.

This match offers Marinho an opportunity to capture his second WNO belt. In January this year, Marinho defeated Craig Jones, a former Ryan teammate, to win the light heavyweight strap.

After some needed time off from competition in 2021 due to health issues, Ryan leaped into action late last year to face BJJ brown belt and UFC welterweight Phillip Rowe in an “exhibition” grappling match. Also, in March of this year, Ryan met yet another brown belt, Jacob “The Hillbilly Hammer,” at WNO, who he defeated by submission.

How to see it LIVE: Ryan and Marinho are set to compete against each other at Who’s Number One on Thursday, July 14th. The match will air LIVE on FloGrappling (yearly subscription required).
