Ahead of his lightweight title fight against Islam Makhachev at UFC 284, UFC featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski got some high-tech training help from none other than the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg.

The tech mogul and the Aussie fighter sparred in the metaverse – a virtual reality (VR) space that enables users to interact with each other inside a virtual reality environment – and shared a clip of the session on social media. For their training session, the duo wore MMA gloves and were wired up in motion-capture suits — allowing them to exchange throws both in real life and as animated characters in the metaverse.

Zuckerberg captioned the clip: “Last year, UFC #1 pound-for-pound fighter Alex Volkanovski stopped by Meta HQ to train with me, and for fun, we tested the limits of our performance avatars with motion capture in our Engage gear. Good luck this weekend, Alex!” Knowing Volkanovski had his eye on becoming a dual-weight UFC champion, Zuckerberg says at the end of their video: “Go get that second belt!”

ZUCKERBERG AND MMA

Zuckerberg is famously a massive MMA fan, having previously shared some footage of him sparring with Khai Wu at Meta HQ last year. But, this time around, he’s leveled up by sparring with an actual UFC fighter! And it seems like his training paid off – Volkanovski was impressed by his counter move, exclaiming: “Good counter too, how good was that counter?”

With a net worth of $68 billion, Zuckerberg can afford to bring in the best trainers and sparring partners – let’s watch to see if he has what it takes to go toe-to-toe with one of the world’s best MMA fighters!
