In any grappling sport, knowing when to give up on a submission attempt is a critical skill to have so you don’t injure yourself or get into a compromising position. However, professional MMA fighter Igor Konstantinov decided to go all in on a modified buggy choke at MMA Series 54: Triumph. In doing so, he broke his own arm in the process and ultimately lost the match.

BJJ legend Rafael Lovato Jr., a former Bellator MMA middleweight champion and grand slam BJJ icon who just retired from Gi competition at this year’s Worlds, posted about the odd occurrence on his Instagram account.

You can watch the video of Konstantinov’s unintentional self-submission below.

Buggy Choke fiasco breakdown

Just over a minute into the match, Konstantinov is on his back in bottom side control, attempting what appears to be a modified buggy choke. Modified meaning without the proper arm and leg placement. Konstantinov was unable to secure the proper pressure on the unique choke. So instead, he used power over technique and squeezed so hard on the failed choke that he broke his own arm just a few seconds into the attempt. After just over 30 seconds of squeezing, Konstantinov suddenly lets go to reveal he has a badly broken forearm, prompting the referee to end the fight and a win for Vasily Rudenko, his opponent.

With the loss, Konstantinov dropped his record to 2-5 as a professional, while Vasily Rudenko improved to 5-0.
