Her mat name, ‘Jiu-Jitsu Grandma,’ her age 73, her real name, Elaine Wynn Beiersdoerfer. Elaine has become sort of an internet sensation recently with over 25k followers on Instagram and has now been featured on the new reality show ‘Mat Made’ by Kenny Kim.

Elaine trains out of Kaliff Oliverira’s Gracie Barra Gym in Pelham, Alabama. She first became interested in Judo when she was 20 and took a 6-week course back in college and originally thought she would return to Judo, but her hometown was short on Judo Dojos, her next option… Jiu-Jitsu. She stepped back on the mats when she was 69 years old and hasn’t looked back since.

She was encouraged by Olivera to take Jiu-Jitsu Classes at the gym to help her get back into martial arts. After she started, her doctor was amazed by the health benefits she was getting and also how dense her bones were for someone her age.

She only notes having to take one time off from training due to an injury she received at her farm working.

“I like the fighting, and I know that’s odd for someone my age, but I had two older brothers, and they would do a lot of wrestling around with me.”

In the most recent episode of Kenny Kim’s Mat Made, Kenny Develops a King of the Mat game where the opponent has to touch the other person’s foot to move on to the next hill until only one person remains. Elaine went against a noticeably younger white belt and won! She advanced through multiple rounds of the game until she eventually lost to another blue belt.

“I used to practice on my husband, but I hurt him one time. I bent his shoulder too far, and now he won’t let me practice on him anymore.”

Elaine is now an inspiration to anyone who has doubts about joining, thinking they may be too old or it’s a young man’s game. At 73, she is proving everyone wrong and inspiring thousands to get on the mats and train!
