Gordon Ryan was teasing an upcoming match for several days, and now it’s official! The ADCC and grappling superstar will fight Felipe Pena in a submission-only, no time limit match on Sunday, August 7, in Dallas, TX.

These two ADCC champions have been trading blows and jabs on Instagram throughout the last week, which, let’s be honest, is not outside the norm, as they’ve been at each other on Instagram and Facebook since 2016.

Switching gears to Pena, he is one of just two grapplers to hold a victory over Ryan in nearly 5 years. Ryan is 63-1 since his last loss to Pena. Not bad by any standard. To add to the rivalry, one year before defeating Ryan at ADCC, Pena earned a submission victory over him at the 45-minute mark in an hour-long match… a match of attrition, to say the least. Pena is the only grappler who has ever submitted Gordon Ryan at the black belt level.

This upcoming match will be the third time they will face off in the past six years but don’t cash in yet; it’s not the only rematch on the schedule for Ryan. Just before he faces Pena this August, he will battle against the WNO light heavyweight champion Pedro Marinho in a 30-minute match at the WNX Finale on Friday, July 15, in Austin, TX.

Looking back a few years, Ryan and Marinho first faced off in the first round of the absolute division at ADCC 2019. Ryan submitted Marinho via a nasty heel hook. That said, Marinho was only a purple belt at the time and has developed exponentially on the mats since then. It won’t be the same Marinho Ryan faced 3 years ago. Also not to mention he is the reigning double-gold IBJJF No-Gi Worlds champion. This double-gold plus the WNO title…. Ryan has his work cut out for him this time.

Both of these much-anticipated summer matchups are poised to be the most competitive grappling contests for Ryan in years. Check back here for more announcements for the rest of the August and July cards and your breaking grappling news!
