Referred to as ‘The King’, 27-year-old Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and 5x ADCC World Champion Gordon Ryan has recently been spotted grappling with 34-year-old Icelandic strongman Thor Bjornsson (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson)… clearly either demonstrating his incredible Jiu-Jitsu ability or shear craziness for attempting a roll with the ‘Mountain.’ Watch the video below to find out.

Who is Hafþór Björnsson?

A remarkable feat, Hafþór Björnsson achieved the first-ever trifecta – he won Arnold Strongman Classic, Europe’s Strongest Man, and World’s Strongest Man competitions all in one year! Topping it off with an extraordinary accomplishment on May 2nd of 2020, where he deadlifted a whopping 501 kilograms (1,105lb), dubbed as ‘The Heaviest Deadlift of All-Time.’ Hafþór has set himself apart from any athlete before him.

Standing at a colossal 6’7″ (2.06 m) tall and weighing in at an impressive 335 pounds (152 kg), it’s no surprise that Thor earned the nickname of “The Mountain.” He is also well-known and possibly best known for his role on Game of Thrones, playing Ser Gregor Clegane.

The Size Difference

Before taking on the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3, Ryan believed it would be wise to measure his Jiu-Jitsu skills against Björnsson’s immense strength. At 6’2 and 99kg (218 lbs), Ryan is quite hefty, but Thor has 50% more body weight than him! As if that were not enough, he also holds the title of the World’s Strongest Man– so could skill defeat sheer power? Let’s watch and find out!

Former UFC champion Jake Shields released a clip of Gordon Ryan and Hafþór Júlíus participating in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu session, where it seemed that “The King” was the more dominant fighter against “The Mountain,” managing to even execute an effective butterfly sweep.

What Ryan and Björnsson had to say…

Ryan during an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, had the following to say about his experience rolling with the strongman:

“This is actually perfect for me because now whenever I get into an argument with an idiot who’s like, ‘I’m just too strong for that s**t to work on me.’ I can be like, well, I literally grappled the strongest person on the planet, and I can assure you that it worked…”

Ryan further said…

“First of all, it was probably the dumbest and most risky career choice I’ve ever made. It was the day before I was supposed to compete. I was like, man, if I get hurt, John [Danaher] is gonna kill me…”

Thor promptly jumped to Instagram after his experience with ‘The King’ to fill everyone in on how he just got humbled:

“Literally went against the best and got humbled quite badly. @martinslciis and I got the opportunity to meet up with [Gordon Ryan] while he was doing his last workout before he competes tomorrow. I love trying out new sport and what a pleasure it was. Excited to watch Gordon crush his opponent tomorrow! This guy is next level!”
