According to a shocking post on the federation’s Instagram account, Mica Galvao, the black belt superstar from Manaus, told us that he intends to compete in the medium heavyweight division at the 2022 IBJJF World Championship.
Galvao continued in his statement that the move to the higher weight divisions is due to his intentions to compete in the absolute division.
“I’m going to be doing medium-heavy at the Worlds this year. I chose the weight because I wanted to do the open class, and historically there haven’t been any middleweights that won an open class, so I wanted to try and get some more muscles to compete in the open class.”
Galvao has almost always competed in the middleweight division or at lightweight and with much success. Just recently, he won the 2022 IBJJF Brasileiros in the middleweight division, winning each of his matches via submission. With ADCC quickly approaching, Galvao has qualified to compete in the 77 kg division; this is just a few lbs. above the IBJJF lightweight limit…. maybe in the future, we will see this superstar in the upper weight classes even at the ADCC, would be epic to say the least.
Looking at his track record, Galvao has already proven he can handle some of the best competitors the medium heavyweight division can offer. Earlier this month, at BJJ Stars 8, Galvao won against the seven-time IBJJF world champion Leandro Lo and then submitted 2019 medium heavyweight world champ Lucas Hulk Barbosa in the final. What a match, to say the least, with the Grappling icon in the making.
Interestingly, neither of those two returning champions nor the reigning champ, Gustavo Batista, are registered for Worlds currently; what an opportunity! However, the division does already includes several intriguing matchups for Galvao, such as Pedro Marinho, Roberto Jimenez, and 2021 Pan Champion Andre Porfiro, to name a few. It will be no walk in the park, but Galvao continues to prove himself match after match.
It’s possible that Galvao could also encounter a who’s who of top-tier black belts in the open class, which is a different animal altogether. Some of the most anticipated potential matchups include Victor Hugo and Nicholas Meregali.
Registration for the 2022 IBJJF World Championships closes in just 2 days on May 22. Then we will see exactly how everything is stacking up across all the brackets.
