BJJ Stars 8 commenced this past Saturday, April 30, and featured an eight-man Gi Grand Prix in addition to several ADCC-ruleset matches. Mica Galvao (The teenage black belt phenom) arguably gave the best competitive grappling display of his young career, defeating Leandro Lo, Mauricio Oliveira, and Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa to take home BJJ Stars middleweight title. An epic performance, to say the least.

Galvao’s 3 epic matches

The face-off between Galvao and Lo was one of the most anticipated of the evening and did not disappoint. Breaking down the match, Galvao worked nearly exclusively from the back with a near armbar earning him the only advantage of the match and thus the win. He staved off Lo’s knee-cut guard passing attempts minute after minute for the entire match. Jumping to the semifinals, nearly midway through the match, Galvao won over Oliveira after Oliveira was forced to tap out due to a knee injury even though he was up on points.

The final with Galvao against Barbosa was earthshattering, to say the least! High-paced takedown attempts from stand-up ensued for about nine-and-a-half minutes. Barbosa then committed to a shot which Galvao masterfully countered. Galvao was on Barbosa’s back in seconds, deploying the Grand Prix-winning bow-and-arrow choke.

BJJ Stars No-gi action

Jumping over to the no-gi action, long-time UFC veteran Damien Maia returned to the mats after over a decade of being absent from the competitive grappling scene. Maia looked like he never stopped competing in grappling with a resounding triangle choke submission win over fellow UFC veteran Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira.

In other matches, recent ADCC Trials winner Fabricio Andrey won by decision over Alex Sodre. There were moments throughout the match of why Andrey is one of the most thrilling grapplers in the 66 kg ADCC division. However, Sodre’s unyielding defensive guard offered mostly an uneventful match.

Lastly, making the highlights is Gutemberg Pereira from GF Team. He collected a submission against top-ranked IBJJF Gi competitor Fellipe Andrew. Pereira launched a standing guillotine right out the gate of the match and followed it down to the mats, where he won a quick tap. Looking back at the ADCC South American Trials, Pereira submitted each of his opponents. His impressive showing here at BJJ Stars against one of the best in the world shows promise for Pereira’s chances at the ADCC World Championships come this September.
